For my glitch project, I wanted to explore the literal and metaphorical differences between something from the past, like advertisement images, and the modern technology of the digital age. The process and practice of glitching is really only associated with current digital capabilities—besides the organic and unintentional glitches that would occur with the invention of the television—so I thought it would be thought-provoking to layer that association on top of older references. It was also meant as a bit of a criticism against some of the sexist and misogynistic ideologies that were displayed in almost all media at the time.
I really dove into the text glitching method, to the point where I began to understand certain patterns within the chaotic mess of code behind each image. Some pictures would be impacted by the code change line by line, where I would work my way down individually styling each line of glitch. Others would change throughout the entire image, or at least a large portion of it. For these images it was a lot quicker of a process, while the images affected line by line could take me around forty five minutes to get to a point I was happy with.
If I were to recreate this series, I would further explore image generating AI programs to find vintage posters and advertisements that fit the aesthetic I was looking for to create even further serendipity. I would also want to prioritize the creation of a datamosh video of an old television program to even further the contrast of the overall cultures and way of life.
